Part of Porto Design Biennale 2021, AUTRE was presented at MNSR and curated by Caroline Naphegyi and Sam Baron. Using the surrealist technique of cadavre exquis, the exhibition invited French and Portuguese artists, designers and thinkers to develop new work from a collection of objects gathered in Porto, including pieces from the museum’s own reserves. The result unfolds across the exhibition rooms and Cerca, a space housing part of the lapidary collection, questioning the human footprint on the planet, the stories embedded in artefacts, and the nature of the museum itself.

Autre-là is a preliminary exhibition room conceived as a welcoming space, presenting the construction process of the French programme alongside the research material, sketches, readings and contributions gathered throughout. It also serves as the starting point for a guided tour through Porto and Matosinhos, tracing a selection of unexpected places across both cities.
