Fundo sem fundo presented more than thirty paintings by Sérgio Fernandes, produced between 2021 and 2022 during a residency between his atelier and Centro de Arte Oliva. The work extends his ongoing research into abstract painting and colour perception, developed through a deliberately reduced chromatic range concentrated in reds, violets, blues and dark greens. The large rectangular compositions are structured in distinct areas of colour that shift between density and atmosphere through almost imperceptible transitions. Layers of pigment, glaze and overlapping colour interact to produce new hues that change according to the light and the viewer’s position.
